During Academic Years 2015/16 and 2016/17, Signs for Worship Walsall offered BSL Courses through our link with MySign Tuition, based in Peterborough – yes, the tutor came over from Cambridgeshire every week! Our time for delivering courses locally has come to an end, but we are always indebted to to MySign Tuition for their hours of dedication and experience, and we are more than happy to recommend their Signature accredited courses. You will learn Deaf Awareness, fingerspelling and how to introduce yourself to a Deaf BSL user, then move onto having basic conversations about family, pets and animals, food and drink, describing places and people, daily routines, weather and transport.
There are 3 assessments you need to pass in order to achieve the qualification:
- An informal 5 minute conversation in BSL with the tutor discussing transport, weather and family. This assessment is marked by the tutor then the marks are submitted to Signature for verification
- A filmed 5 minute conversation in BSL with the tutor on a topic chosen by you from a choice of 3 offered by Signature. These are usually connected to food and drink, pets and animals, describing people or places. The film clip is then sent to an external assessor and the marks are passed to the tutor within 6-8 weeks
- A filmed 5 minute conversation in BSL with the tutor on a topic chosen by you from a choice of 3 offered by Signature. These are usually connected with your daily routine, how the weather affects your daily routine or describing people or places. The film clip is then sent to an external assessor and the marks are passed to the tutor within 6-8 weeks.
Once all three assessments are passed a certificate is issued by Signature for the recognised qualification of BSL Level 1.
During the course there will be homework issued. Most of this will involve you practising your signing and preparing for conversations. It is helpful if you have access to the internet as there are resources which can be used.
Missing a session will mean you will miss some vocabulary and learning. Obviously if you or a child is ill that cannot be helped but it will mean you will need to catch up. Please try not to miss sessions if you can help it.
There will be games! Hopefully you will find the learning fun. I do believe if you enjoy and have fun while learning you remember more.
Level 1 courses begin in September of each year.
The course is approximately 36 weeks long, each session lasting for 2 hours.
There are three assessments:
201: A receptive task, watching a BSL signed story and answering the multiple choice questions. The answer sheet is then sent to Signature for marking
202: A 5 minute presentation by the learner to the assessor on a topic chosen by the learner including various basic linguistic skills taught in the course. This is filmed and sent to an external assessor
203: A 7 minute conversation between the learner and the assessor on a topic chosen by the learner. This is filmed and sent to an external assessor
Both assessment 202 and 203 MUST be signed strictly in BSL with appropriate Non-manual features (NMF) otherwise this is an automatic fail.
Topics covered are:
- General everyday conversation
- Shopping and spending
- Holiday and travel
- Food and drink
Of these the first is compulsory; the last three are choices of which the learner chooses one for the 202 and a different one for the 203.
PowerPoints will be emailed along with any extra notes. BSL filmed notes with examples of the linguistic skills taught will be in a shared Dropbox/Google drive folder. Mock assessment papers will be available along with model answers.
Section 2 – Presentation Research
The possible topics for the presentation assessment will be given and help with research. Mock presentations will be assessed and full feedback given either by email or BSL video or both whichever is required.
Section 3 Receptive Practice
Practice receptive clips and mock question papers will be available and will be marked.
The tutor is available via email or skype for any problems or questions. 1:1 meetings are available by appointment. Booking for assessments will only be made when both the tutor and the learner agree the learner is ready.
The qualification is split into two units; in order to achieve the full qualification both units must be completed.
- Unit 601 – Understand complex British Sign Language in a wide range of work situations
- Unit 602 – Use complex British Sign Language in a wide range of work situations
Both units are assessed through portfolio.
Although both titles refer to ‘work situations’ the content and assessment criteria allow for a wide range of contexts.
Unit 601 – evidence is gathered through watching BSL videos and translating into first language, proving understanding whilst taking part in discussions and conversations (filmed). The learner must show they can understand technical vocabulary and complex grammatical structures at any speed and length in most work and social situations.
Unit 602 – evidence is gathered through at least 8 filmed conversations, discussions and presentations on at least two distinct subject areas totalling at least 45 minutes. The learner must show they can communicate their own opinions and beliefs, use complex language, clearly and fluently in a wide range of situations.
Those wishing to enrol onto this course should have a good understanding of how to film, upload and save onto discs. Cameras and laptops are essential.
All clips need to be assessed by the learner who will complete self-assessment sheets. This is time consuming and involves watching the filmed clips and explaining which of the necessary criteria has been covered, how and why.
This is a demanding course, experience of signing to at least a Level 3 standard is essential. Classes will be once a month on Saturdays in Rugby (venue to be confirmed).
